About the Disaster Readiness Fundraising Drive

The American Red Cross just launched a national fundraising drive in anticipation of an extremely active hurricane season that could be made even worse by the Gulf oil spill.

Current predictions from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) resemble the 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons when multiple major hurricanes, including Katrina, struck the U.S. More than 35 million people live in regions vulnerable to Atlantic hurricanes. It’s possible that people will need to evacuate their homes for longer periods of time this season given the oil spill.

No other non-governmental organization can respond to disasters on the size and scale of the Red Cross but we depend on donations from the American public to be ready.

The Red Cross spends about $450 million in an average year on disaster relief throughout the U.S., from large events such as hurricanes to everyday house fires, including those in our own community. We’ve already spent nearly $30 million this hurricane season training and preparing volunteers and pre-positioning equipment and materials near areas that could be hit by hurricanes. We’re gearing up to provide 1 million meals a day for hurricane victims, to shelter 350,000 people a day and to deploy more than 50,000 volunteers.

Contributions to the Disaster Readiness Fundraising Drive will support Red Cross readiness to respond to the nearly 70,000 disasters we will face nationwide this year. Please help spread the word: Click, Text or Call to donate to the Red Cross to help people affected by disasters. (For more information, visit redcross.org)

How Disaster Relief Donations Bring Hope:

$10:
Provides one “comfort kit” and blanket to a disaster client. The kit contains deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, facial tissues, wash cloth, shampoo, liquid soap, lotion, comb, razor and shaving cream.
$25:
Provides breakfast, lunch and dinner to a shelter resident.
$50:
Provides food and shelter to a person for one day. This service includes preparation of breakfast, lunch and dinner, the costs to mobilize and distribute a cot, two blankets and a comfort kit as well as the costs of Red Cross workers to provide this service.
$150:

$575:
Covers the cost to deploy one emergency response vehicle (ERV) and two Red Cross workers to a disaster operation for one day. These vehicles travel throughout affected areas providing warm food and cold drinks, as well as needed supplies like clean-up and comfort kits. This daily cost includes the cost of fuel and maintenance.
$1,500:
Covers the cost to provide a family of four all of the Red Cross emergency services, including feeding, sheltering, bulk distribution and client casework. This includes five nights in a shelter with meals for four people, one bulk package, and casework for one family. The bulk package includes a cooler; flashlight; batteries; hand sanitizer; insect repellant; sunscreen; a clean-up kit with a sectional handle with mop, broom, squeegee and push broom heads, pail, scrub brush, sponge, disinfectant, detergent/degreaser, bleach, trash bags, gloves and dust mask; and a comfort kit for each family member.
